Via San Bernardino, 49 - Verbania Pallanza
The Il Maggiore events centre, designed by a team led by the renowned Madrilenian architect Salvador Perez Arroyo, was inaugurated in June 2016. It is a panoramic landscape architecture on Lake Maggiore, at the confluence of the San Bernardino river with the lake.
A multifunctional venue that is both a natural extension of the surrounding landscape and, at the same time, a highly innovative architectural element that stands out. Il Maggiore by Salvador Perez Arroyo is inspired by ‘river stones’, the architect has developed gentle oversize volumes that evoke the rounded pebble shapes.
Theatre, music, cinema, dance, meetings and multimedia shows are hosted in this futuristic building constructed of four interconnected volumes clad in a titanium zinc surface that evokes the shades of the stones found on the banks of the lake.
Closely aligned, the four units open directly towards the lake basin with a system of stairways and a large outdoor space that can accommodate up to 2000 people, generating a natural arena with a panoramic view of Lake Maggiore and the surrounding landscape.
Arroyo’s four large stones ‘dialogue’ with the terrain by gently blending in with the riverfront, the beach and the Villa Maioni park, seat of the Civic Library.
Il Maggiore is an architectural complex with a contemporary, sculptural and highly expressive identity; it hosts a 560-seat theatre auditorium, a smaller 120-seat hall, a large entrance, a spacious foyer that can be modulated by sliding partitions, plus a rehearsal room and a restaurant bar.
This internal panel system enables multiple installations and flexible spaces with the option of connecting the theatre room to the foyer, creating an accessible and multifunctional space that can accommodate up to 950 people. Last but not least, a large stage, equipped with an orchestra pit, is also available to host opera performances.
A contemporary, functional and innovative space for art and culture conceived as a futuristic art sculpture that remains forever etched on the minds of those who visit the city or glimpse its rounded contours as they sail past on the lake.
