The Sacred Mountains of Verbano

Built between the 16th and 17th centuries, the nine Sacred Mountains of Piedmont and Lombardy – two in Lombardy (Ossuccio and Varese), and seven in Piedmont (Belmonte, Crea, Domodossola, Ghiffa, Oropa, Orta, and Varallo) – are architectural complexes erected in unforgettable natural landscapes. They consist of churches, chapels, and small or large structures housing frescoes, paintings, sculptures depicting the history of Christ, the life of Mary or the Saints, or the mysteries of the Rosary.

Three of these nine Sacred Mountains – the Sacred Mountain of Ghiffa, the Sacred Mountain of Orta, and the Sacred Mountain of Domodossola – can be easily reached from Verbania, an ideal starting point to discover Verbano through art, history, nature, and faith.

The Sacred Mountains of Piedmont and Lombardy became part of the UNESCO World Heritage in 2003 and are ideal places for tourism sensitive to art, the spectacle of nature, and the values of spirituality.

Sacred Mountain of Ghiffa

@ErwinMeier

Immersed in a nature reserve with a panoramic view of Lake Maggiore and the Lombard Prealps, the Sacred Mountain of the Holy Trinity of Ghiffa, the smallest of the Piedmontese Sacred Mountains, is an architectural gem built on an oratory where the miraculous "triple-faced effigy of Christ" was venerated.

Between the late 17th and mid-18th centuries, it was decided to create a Sacred Mountain around the oratory, representing episodes from the Old and New Testaments.

The complex includes three chapels dedicated to the Coronation, St. John the Baptist, and Abraham, as well as the sanctuary and the 18th-century portico of the Via Crucis.

The Sacred Mountain of Orta stands on a promontory overlooking Lake Orta. It distinguishes itself from other Sacred Mountains due to the close relationship between the surrounding nature and the buildings that compose it, carefully studied and organized since the original design of the complex to allow pilgrims to enjoy spectacular views of the lake along the path.

The history of the complex dates back to 1583 but materialized only in 1590 when the Orta community decided to establish a convent near the church of San Nicolao, a proto-Romanesque building that houses the ancient wooden group of the Madonna della Pietà dating back to the 14th century.

In 1591, the Capuchin Franciscans initiated the construction of twenty chapels dedicated to the life of St. Francis.

Sacred Mountain of Domodossola

@Clemensfranz

In the second half of the 17th century, on the hill of Mattarella, two Capuchin friars from the convent of Domodossola promoted the construction of a Sacred Mountain dedicated to the mysteries of the Rosary.

Its 15 chapels, twelve dedicated to the stations of the Via Crucis and three representing the Deposition of the Cross, the Sepulcher, and the Resurrection, are positioned along a path that starts from the city center and reaches the hill.

The Sacred Mountain of Domodossola has a close connection to the Passion of Christ, especially with the Calvary, so much so that at the top, at the end of the path, there is a Sanctuary with an octagonal base dedicated to the Holy Cross.

The Complex also includes the medieval Castle of Mattarella, the Convent of the Rosminian Fathers, and the Oratory of Our Lady of Grace.
